Bothell West Hill Home
Seattle Real Estate | Gerhard Ade
A private lodge you will love to call your own. | Sold
This 2019 Bothell West Hill home is much like a country estate. An expansive green space separates it from life beyond. The reflections through the tall fir trees belong to Lake Washington. The nearest boat launch is about a mile away. (A two-story-high additional building next to the home can easily hold a 16-foot boat and an RV.)
The home itself has the look and feel of a lodge. This comes as no surprise if you know the inspiration for the design. More on that below. Only 4 miles to the east, there is another Lodge.
On five landscaped acres, it is the highly-rated Willows Lodge with its Barking Frog restaurant. Both are located in the Woodinville Wine Country, famous for offering a taste of all the wines that Washington State has to offer. While there, why not attend an open-air performance at the Chateau Ste. Michelle winery voted Seattle’s best outdoor concert venue?
Back at our own private lodge, the home’s chef kitchen easily holds its own. The eight-burner Bluestar double-oven stove is but one example of the home’s top-of-the-line American and European appliances. (More on that, here.) The same is true for the home’s finishes best exemplified by the dovetail-jointed solid wood drawers found throughout the 4,185 square feet (388 m2) of living space. The covered outdoor porch overlooks the southwest facing park-like setting of the 1.64-acre (0.66 hectare) lot. This the place to be even later in the year while sipping that favorite beverage and enjoying the flickering flames in front of the two-way fireplace.
The home is located in the Westhill neighborhood of Bothell, an area that was annexed by the city only in 2014. It shares its elevation with the nearby Magnolia Farm and cattle company which produces Wagyu beef. The sunset and mountain views from the home are as glorious as the light that floods the interior through the 47 new windows. The renovation of the home was completed in 2019 and received the official stamp of approval with the final inspection in 2020.
Speaking of elevations, the home’s crowning touch is a second-story master suite with an extra bedroom for small people who may need special attention. The same word, attention, also applies to the many thoughtful touches found throughout the home. For example, in the five-piece master bedroom, there is a special vertical drawer with a hidden electrical outlet that holds all the hairstyling instruments anyone would ever need.
Now the home’s level of luxury matches its elevated location. The aforementioned kitchen was expanded as were the dining and living room. Everything in this home is new, including the roof, siding, windows, flooring, the covered back porch, and attached 3-car garage with one tall bay. In existence, but completely refurbished and professionally maintained is the in-ground swimming pool.
Don’t miss the video and the virtual tour of this Westhill Bothell home.
The separate structure, a 1,080 square foot (100 m2) accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was also renovated. It is ideal for working from home. Behind the home office are an oversized garage for boat or RV storage and a storage loft. See all the home facts below.
Zillow just selected this Northwest Estate as one of the five most beautiful listings nationwide!
“Every once in a while we come across a home that leaves us speechless. Good thing emojis can fill in the blanks while we pick our jaws off the floor.” That’s what Zillow said about this Bothell West Hill home. More about the Zillow email here.
The home is in an ideal location. Far away from the city buzz yet close enough for a comfortable commute by public transportation or private car. Seattle and Bellevue are nearly equidistant – 13 miles to Bellevue Square and about 15 miles to Pike Place Market..

The Bothell Westhill Home Interior
What we love about this home is its history, the neighborhood, the safety of being on a dead-end street where children can play, the privacy of the home’s parklike setting, yet being close to schools and transportation. We renovated the accessory dwelling first so we could live in it while the home we loved was partly demolished only to rise up as the new home we love even more. You can live in this home and work from this home thanks to the built-in technology and never feel that you are missing a thing. – The Haney Family

The story behind the Bothell Westhill home
Years before the term “Urban Farmhouse” became commonplace, Megan Haney converted a pseudo-Dutch Colonial into one of a few homes that deserved that designation. In 2013, the Haney Seattle Maple Leaf single-family home was featured on Houzz.com, the go-to website for home design trends. Everything was perfect for the growing family except for the limited outdoor space.
From the Urban Farmhouse to the Private Lodge
That need for more outdoor space was more than satisfied when the family of nine moved from the urban farmhouse into a Bothell Westhill home. The park-like setting was a perfect playground, and the southwestern views of the mountains were drenched in color during the sunsets. Inspired by the surroundings and the design of North European lodges, Megan set out to do it all over again. She transformed a conventionally pretty country-style home into a boldly beautiful private lodge.
Bothell West Hill home: Understated Luxury
When we encounter this Bothell West Hill home at the end of a secluded cul-de-sac, it doesn’t jump out at but greets us quietly with a wink. The orange beams at the front entrance hint that there is more behind the modest appearance. Instead of entering the home through the front door, we push open a matching orange gate between on the left side of the home. We discover a concrete path that runs between the home on the right and another separate structure on the left. The path first narrows and then expands to a first glimpse of the lawn and the giant evergreens beyond.
Material wealth in fixtures and finishes
We stop near the end of the concrete walkway, where a Dutch door opens into the dining area. The 14-foot solid oak dining table aligns perfectly with the kitchen countertop. It is made of Pental Quartz, as are all the bathroom counters and the hearth of the fireplace. We are walking on luxury vinyl flooring, which is underfoot throughout the 4,185 square foot home. It is easy to clean and withstands the claws of our four-legged friends. Throw-carpets here and there add visual interest.

The kitchen leaves nothing to be desired, even for the most demanding chef. The BlueStar eight-burner double oven stove takes center space between the Electrolux freezer and refrigerator. All kitchen cabinets are crafted in solid wood with dovetail-joined cabinetry. All are soft-closing. The cabinets along the walls rise to meet the nine-foot ceiling. We discover a nice touch. There are four waste containers to sort refuse hidden in pull-out cabinets.
Had we arrived in the kitchen from the adjacent three-car garage, we would have walked through a multi-purpose anteroom that is ingeniously part coat room, mudroom, and computer workstation. Logically, this is also where behind a door we find ourselves in the walk-in kitchen pantry.
Let there be light!
Wherever you enter this home, the abundance of natural light is one of the hallmarks of this lodge-like home. There is a total of 47 mullioned Milgard fiberglass windows with almost every room receiving light from two or more directions. We see that desire for natural light in the two tall French living room doors where light flows through the transoms above. In the darker seasons of the Pacific Northwest, light is nature’s vitamin D.
The hub and spokes of this Bothell West Hill home
The living room is the hub of this home. It connects the kitchen and dining area on one side with two levels of living area on the other side. There we find three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the upper and one bedroom with a bathroom on the lower level. Also on the lower level are the laundry, the utility room, and the family room. It connects on the ground level to the backyard and is closest to the in-ground pool.
Had we entered the home through the northeast facing front door instead, we would have encountered first the living room. At the far end under the vaulted ceiling, the two-way fireplace connects to the covered outdoor patio. Separated from the living room by a barn door – yes there is one – a room that could be a small office is currently used as a music room.
Up and Away
More than anything, it is the second story addition that gives this home the feeling of a lodge. Behind the kitchen, two flights of stairs take us to the master suite and an extra bedroom. The extra bedroom is currently used as a sewing room with the adjacent closet as storage. Add another door in the hallway and this becomes the second closet of the master bedroom. The location of the master suite offers the utmost privacy. The views of the setting sun and the Olympic Mountains can be spectacular.
The Bothell Westhill Home Office
There is enough space to work at home, but that is not the same as having a home office. This is where the 1,180 square foot so-called Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) comes in. With a separate entrance, the office space is suitable for a variety of businesses. It even has a small kitchen and a bathroom with a shower.
An extra garage, size extra large
We enter the home office through the separate entrance of the Accessory Dwelling. Connected with the office, another garage with extra storage. The height of the garage allows for the parking of two tall vehicles, such as an RV or large boat. The cavernous space leaves plenty of room to store any number of tools and still use part of the garage as a personal gym.
Around the grounds
Against the backdrop of towering pine trees, the lawn of the 1.64 acre property gently slopes to the southeast away from the back of the home. Brush, fruit trees, and some 200 plants dot the landscape around the house. A sprinkler system takes care of the seasonal growth. The in-ground swimming pool, fenced for safety, is newly tiled and has been professionally maintained. The driveway is large enough for a 16-year old to practice parallel parking and do the three-point turn in preparation for the driving test.
Bothell West Hill neighborhood
The home is located at the cul-de-sac of 86th Ave NE in the Westhill neighborhood of Bothell. A school by the same name, Westhill Elementary, is just up the road. Walking about two blocks we arrive at the Bothell High School. In 2019, the Cougars made it to the State Championship. To the south of the home and close by is the Burke Gilman trail which runs parallel to the Snohomish River. Many people commute on this trail by bike all the way to Redmond and the Microsoft campus.
